There were 22 registered attendees for the combined MN & SD unit rally at the Tulip Festival in Orange City, IA May 15-17. We rendezvoused at Olson’s Campgroud in Worthington, MN on Wednesday, May 14th and were served a wonderful chicken dinner by the Yankes and Edwins.
On Thursday morning we caravanned to Orange City, which was only about a hour away. We camped on the parking lot of the city’s swimming pool, with electricity and use of the activity center for breakfasts and other gatherings. We even met there for a hat decorating contest which was very funny! The weather was beautiful! Temperatures in the upper 70’s.
The tulips around town (Millions) were absolutely beautiful! The city has many windmills & beautiful Dutch architecture. The townspeople from babies to great-grand parents were dressed in Dutch costumes including wooden shoes. They even danced in them. We had reserved seating for the ’Straatfest’ (a parade of authentic province costumes & dancing), street scrubbing, & volksparade with floats and Dutch bands marching in wooden shoes. Wish you all could have seen the look on one of the parade participantswhen he started speaking Dutch and Robert Quene answered him in Dutch! We heard the Siouxland Boys Choir and the Dutch Dozen Sing & Dance. We attended the musical “Sound of Music” which in one word was AWESOME.
We toured the Blue Bunny ice cream factory in LeMars (see picture), enjoyed an antique car and antique tractor show, and went to a quilt show with many award winning quilts. It was a totally great weekend. Pictures…
